Polycam ESRI ArcGIS Import Guide

In this guide, you will learn how to import and process Polycam LAS/LAZ datasets in ArcGIS Pro to create detailed 3D visualizations and analyze LiDAR scan data for geospatial projects.

Requirements

ArcGIS Pro Software

Required

Standard or Advanced license with 3D Analyst and Image Analyst extensions enabled

Coordinate System

Important

WGS 1984 for both horizontal and vertical coordinate systems to match data collection standards

Open ArcGIS Pro and Set Up a Project

1Launch ArcGIS Pro

Open ArcGIS Pro on your workstation.

2Create or Open Project

Start a New Project or open an existing one that you'll use for your LAS dataset work.

3Add Dataset Folder

In the Catalog Pane, add the folder where your LAS dataset will be stored to establish a connection to your data source.

Import and Convert LAZ to LAS

Note: Since ArcGIS Pro does not support LAZ files natively, they must first be converted to LAS format before processing.

1Open Geoprocessing Pane

Go to Analysis > Tools to access the geoprocessing toolbox.

2Search for Convert LAS

In the search bar, type Convert LAS and select the tool from the results.

Configure Convert LAS Tool

1Set Coordinate Systems

Select WGS 1984 for both horizontal and vertical coordinate systems to match data collection standards.

2Specify Target Folder

In the Target Folder field, specify:

  • The folder where the converted LAS files will be saved
  • An output name for the LAS file in the designated folder

Run the Conversion

1Execute Conversion

Click Run to complete the conversion process. The tool will convert your LAZ files to LAS format.

2Verify Data Load

The LAS files will automatically load into the ArcGIS map. You might see a red outline box appear, indicating where the LAS dataset is located in your map view.

Visualize the LAS Data in 2D and 3D

1Convert to 3D Scene

In the View Tab, convert the Map to a Local Scene to display the scan in a 3D view.

Note: Depending on the ArcGIS version, this option may be located under the "Map" Tab instead.

2Render Elevation

ArcGIS automatically provides the LiDAR data in Elevation symbology, displaying height variations with a color gradient as shown below.

3Symbolize with RGB for Realism

In the LAS Dataset Tab, change the Symbology to RGB to represent the point cloud data in realistic color captured during the scan.

Adjust Layer Elevation

1Open Layer Properties

Right-click the LAS dataset layer and select Properties.

2Configure Elevation Settings

Go to the Elevation Tab and set the Cartography Offset to -1.5 to align the data closer to ground level if needed.

Apply Basemap Layer

1Open Basemap Options

Click the Basemap button in the toolbar to view available basemap options.

2Choose a Basemap Type

Select a basemap type that best suits your visualization needs:

2D Basemap

Provides a flat view of the area with standard map features and references.

3D Basemap

Offers a more realistic, dimensional view of the location with terrain and building features.

Pro Tip: By selecting a 3D basemap, additional details such as buildings or houses may be visible, providing better context for the location.

Explore Your 3D Mesh Options

1Open Geoprocessing Pane

Access the Geoprocessing Pane from the Analysis tab.

2Create Point Cloud Scene Layer

Use the Create Point Cloud Scene Layer Content tool to process the LAS data as a 3D mesh for advanced visualization and analysis.
