How to Create a Model from the 3D Generator

The AI 3D Model Generator lets you turn your images into 3D models, converting flat photos into objects you can interact with and share. This tool examines an image to create a 3D version, which is helpful to add directly into a scene or export as a 3D model for further editing.

Note: These instructions are for the AI 3D Model Generator on Polycam Web only. To create 3D generated models on iOS, see How to Create a 3D Model with AI Capture.
Important: You can only use one image to generate a 3D model. Only JPEG and PNG image formats are supported.

Image Requirements

To create a good model, your image should meet the following requirements:

  • The image should be either a PNG or JPEG format
  • Only one object should be present in the image, as multiple objects may lead to distortion or a failed capture
  • To capture as many angles as possible, we suggest using an image where the object is displayed at an isometric angle
  • The generator performs optimally when the object's background is white or solid
Pro Tip: For best results, use a high-resolution image with clear details and good lighting. Images with cluttered backgrounds or multiple objects may not generate accurate 3D models.

How to Create a 3D Model

Follow these steps to generate a 3D model from your image.

1Log In to Polycam

Open Polycam Web and log in to your account.

2Access the Create Tool

On the left-hand side of the page, click the Create button and select the Generate a 3D Model option.

3Upload an Image

Drag and drop an image in the create window, or click to browse and select an image from your computer.

4Begin Processing

Once uploaded, the image will automatically begin processing to create your 3D model. Processing time varies depending on image complexity and size.

5Review and Export

After processing completes, you can view your generated 3D model in the viewer. From here, you can rotate, zoom, and inspect the model from all angles. Use the export options to download your model in various formats for use in other applications or share it directly from Polycam.
