Polycam to Blender
Working with Meshes
1. Import into Blender
In Blender, go to File > Import > Select file type (OBJ, GLTF, DAE, FBX, USDZ, STL, PLY). *Note that our video tutorial below uses a .glTF file format, but Blender supports any of the file types listed below.
2. Reduce Size
Merging overlapping vertices helps to eliminate unwanted duplicates in your model. While this step is not mandatory, we highly recommend it to avoid any potential issues with your model down the line.
Begin by going into to Edit Mode.
Then head over to Select > Select All by Trait > Non Manifold.
The mesh is made up of different pieces. We can make it one piece by going to Mesh > Merge > By Distance. This action will remove duplicate or overlapping vertices.
3. Crop
Next, you’ll want to crop out any unwanted parts of your scan. You may have already done this within Polycam, but there are there are several ways to crop a capture further in Blender.
A simple place to start is in Sculpt Mode with the Box Trim Tool.
The box trim tool allows you to crop out large portions of your model. Expect each crop to take a few seconds to process, depending on the size of the model.
For irregular cuts, use the Lasso trim tool.
4. Smooth
Blender allows you to adjust the texture and material of your model.
Hop into Shading Mode. From there, go to Object > Shade Smooth
5. Sculpt
Use Blender’s Sculpting Tool to fix any loss in surface detail.
