How to Create and Modify Capture Tags

Polycam automatically generates tags using AI to describe the content of your captures and group them accordingly. Tags make it easier to find similar captures, particularly those published on the Explore page. In this article you will learn how capture tags work, how to view them, and how to create your own custom tags on Polycam Web.

How Capture Tags Work

After you complete and save a scan, Polycam's AI analyzes the capture and assigns tags that describe its content based on the objects or environments detected. For example, a room scan might receive tags like "Living Room" or "Interior Design" if those elements are present. These AI-generated tags are assigned automatically and cannot be modified, though you can add and remove your own custom tags on Polycam Web.

Note: Creating and managing custom tags is only available on Polycam Web.

Viewing Your Tags

You can view the tags assigned to a capture by navigating to the capture's details in your Library or Album section. Tags will appear automatically, giving you a quick overview of the key elements detected in the scan.

Exploring Similar Captures

Clicking on any tag will take you to Polycam's Explore page, where you'll see other published captures that share the same tag. This is a great way to find inspiration or browse similar projects from the Polycam community.

How to Create Custom Tags

In addition to AI-generated tags, you can add your own custom tags to your captures on Polycam Web. Custom tags are useful for organizing your library in ways that are meaningful to you. For example, you might tag a capture with a project name, a client name, or a location like "Site A" or "Q2 Survey" to make it easier to find later.

1Open Your Capture Details

In your capture library, click the ... icon next to the capture you want to tag to open the options menu.

2Enter Edit Mode

Select the pencil icon to enter edit mode for your capture. Scroll down to the Explore Tags section at the bottom of the panel, where you'll see any existing tags that have been assigned to the capture.

3Add a Custom Tag

Type the name of your tag into the text field. When you click out of the text field, the tag will be created and added to your capture.

4Remove a Tag

To remove an existing tag, click the x icon next to the tag name. You can remove both custom tags and AI-generated tags this way.

5Save Your Changes

Once you're happy with your tags, click Save to apply your changes.
