Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about exporting your Polycam captures
Space Mode (LiDAR) uses your device's LiDAR sensor to capture depth data and supports floorplan exports (blueprints, measurements, spatial reports). Images can only be exported on the original capture device.
Space (non LiDAR) uses photogrammetry without LiDAR, making it available on more devices. It supports mesh and point cloud exports but does not include floorplan export options. Images can be exported from any device.
Free plan users can only export GLTF files. To access additional export formats including OBJ, FBX, STL, point cloud formats, and floorplan exports, you'll need to upgrade to Basic, Business, or Enterprise plans.
For Space Mode (LiDAR) and Floorplan modes, images are only accessible on the original capture device when Developer Mode is enabled. This is due to how the raw image data is stored locally during capture. If you need to export images from another device, consider using Space (non LiDAR) mode or Object capture methods.
To export blueprints from Floorplan mode, you must first reprocess your capture to reveal the LiDAR layer. Learn more in our guide: How to Reprocess Your Captures.
Different point cloud formats are optimized for different software and use cases:
- LAS/LAZ: Industry standard for surveying and GIS applications
- PLY: General-purpose format with color support
- XYZ: Simple ASCII format for basic point cloud data
- PTS: Compatible with many CAD applications
- DXF: AutoCAD-compatible format
The best format depends on your intended use:
- OBJ: Universal format, works with most 3D software
- FBX: Best for game engines (Unity, Unreal) and animation
- GLTF: Modern web-friendly format, great for online viewing
- USDZ: Apple's format for AR on iOS devices
- STL: Standard for 3D printing
- DAE (Collada): Good for SketchUp and other CAD tools
Free Plan: GLTF exports only. You can view and share captures online but have limited export options.
Basic Plan: Access to 12 export formats including all major mesh formats (OBJ, FBX, GLTF, DAE, STL, USDZ), images, video, and blueprints.
Business & Enterprise Plans: Full access to all export formats including Point Cloud exports (LAS, PLY, PTS, XYZ, DXF, Geo-referenced LAS), floorplan formats (PDF, DXF, PNG, SVG, CSV), and professional features.
Polycam does not currently support the following file formats:
- STEP (.step, .stp): CAD exchange format
- E57 (.e57): Point cloud format
- 3DS (.3ds): Legacy 3D Studio format
- Blender (.blend): Blender native format
- MAX (.max): 3ds Max native format
- Maya (.ma, .mb): Maya native formats
If you need one of these formats, you can export to a supported format (like OBJ or FBX) and convert it using third-party software. For feature requests, please submit a request to our product team.
