Fixing Export Errors: Resolving the "Something Went Wrong" Message

If you see a "Something went wrong" error while exporting a capture in Polycam, this article will help you identify and resolve the most common causes.

Capture Size Too Large

Large captures with high polygon counts can exceed your device's memory limitations during export, causing the "Something went wrong" error. To resolve this, you can use the Remesh tool to reduce the polygon count or texture resolution before exporting.

For more information on how to use this tool, see How to Use the Remesh Tool.

Cloud File Too Large

Large cloud files can have difficulty exporting successfully. We recommend only exporting cloud files that are less than 4 GB. If your file exceeds this size, you have two options to reduce it before exporting:

Option 1: Use the Rescale Tool

The Rescale tool lets you reduce the overall size of your capture before exporting. To use it:

  • Navigate to the capture you want to export and open it.
  • Select the Rescale tool from the editing tools panel.
  • Adjust the scale to reduce the model size, then save your changes before attempting the export again.

Option 2: Adjust Your Export Settings

You can also reduce the file size by lowering the point cloud density in your export settings. To do this:

  • Navigate to the capture you want to export and tap or click the download button.
  • In the export window, select the filter icon on the right-hand side.
  • Adjust the Point Cloud Density setting. You can choose between Low, Medium, and High.
Note: Adjusting the Point Cloud Density only affects the exported file. It will not change the model stored in your Polycam account.

Insufficient Internet Connection

Exporting a capture requires a stable internet connection. If your connection is weak or drops during the export process, Polycam may not be able to complete the export and will display the "Something went wrong" error. Make sure you are connected to a reliable network before attempting to export, and try again once your connection is stable.
