How to Create a 360 Capture

Begin by pressing the record button, then simply rotate your device in a circle along the guided line.

1Prepare Your Environment

Before starting, make sure you have a clear view of the scene you want to capture. Ensure there are no obstructions and that you can rotate smoothly without interruption.

Planning Your Shot: Take a moment to walk around your chosen spot and visualize the full 360° view. Look for potential obstacles or distracting elements that might affect your capture.

2Start Recording

Open the Polycam app and navigate to the 360 Mode. Press the record button to begin capturing your panorama.

3Rotate Your Device

Hold your iPhone steady and slowly rotate it in a complete circle, following the guided line on your screen. It's important to move at a consistent pace to ensure an even capture. You can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on your preference.

Rotation Speed: Moving too quickly can result in blurring or stitching errors. If the app prompts you to slow down, reduce your rotation speed for optimal results.

4Maintain a Steady Speed

Keep your movements slow and steady to avoid any blurring or stitching errors. If you move too quickly, the app may prompt you to slow down.

How to Use the AI Fill Feature

After capturing your 360° panorama, you may notice some areas that were missed or appear incomplete. The AI Fill feature is designed to seamlessly complete these sections, ensuring a polished final image.

5Access the AI Fill Tool

After your 360 scan has been processed, the AI Fill tool becomes available in your capture's editing options.

6Apply AI Fill

Tap the AI Fill button, and the generative AI will begin filling in the selected areas. This process may take a few moments, but keep the app open until it runs the initial passthrough.

AI Processing: The generative AI analyzes the surrounding context and seamlessly fills incomplete areas to create a cohesive 360° image. Results are typically generated within seconds.

Best Practices for 360 Captures

Tips for Optimal Results

  • Lighting Conditions: Shoot in well-lit environments with even lighting for best results. Avoid direct sunlight that creates harsh shadows.
  • Stability: Keep your body as stable as possible while rotating only your upper body and arms. This helps maintain consistent height and perspective.
  • Center Point: Try to rotate around a central axis to maintain perspective consistency throughout the capture.
  • Avoid Moving Objects: Capture scenes with minimal movement to prevent ghosting or stitching artifacts in your final image.
  • Complete the Circle: Ensure you rotate a full 360° and return to your starting position for seamless stitching.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Common Problems and Solutions:
  • Stitching Errors: Caused by rotating too quickly or inconsistent height. Retry the capture with slower, more controlled movement.
  • Incomplete Coverage: Some areas may be missing if rotation wasn't completed fully. Use AI Fill to complete these areas.
  • Blurry Sections: Result of moving too fast or camera shake. Maintain steady, slow rotation throughout the capture.
  • Inconsistent Lighting: Avoid rotating through areas with dramatically different lighting conditions, as this can affect stitching quality.
