Getting Started

Floorplan Digitizer works directly from the capture screen. You can photograph an existing floorplan on the spot, or upload a file you already have.

1Open Floorplan Mode

  • Tap the camera icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the app
  • Select Floorplan mode

2Select Trace

  • Tap the Scan drop-down
  • Select Trace

3Capture or Upload Your Floorplan

In Trace mode, choose one of the following:

  • Take a photo: Capture the floorplan directly using your device's camera
  • Upload Photo: Tap Upload Photo to select an existing floorplan sketch or file from your device

4Define the Scale

Set the floorplan's scale using a known measurement:

  • Click two points on the image to mark a known dimension, such as the length of a wall
  • Enter the actual, real-world length of that dimension
  • Click the gear icon next to Distance to switch between Metric and Imperial units
  • Click Reset Points to clear your selection and start again
  • Click Submit once your measurement is entered

After a few moments, your floorplan is digitized. Polycam extracts walls, rooms, and dimensions into an editable floorplan and generates a 3D model of the space.

Note: All digitized walls default to a height of 8 feet.

Tip: If your space has multiple floors, upload each floor separately rather than combining them into a single image.

Tips for Digitizing Hand-Drawn Sketches

Hand-drawn sketches and rough floorplans vary in quality and clarity. Follow these best practices for the most accurate digitization.

1Crop the Image Before Uploading

Crop your image to the approximate region you want digitized before uploading. Uploading a floorplan that's only part of a larger image can cause:

  • Lower resolution: Only a fraction of the image is used, reducing detail in the extracted floorplan
  • Incorrect detection: Extra content in the frame, such as objects outside the floorplan, can be mistaken for walls

2Check the Floorplan Editor After Digitizing

If you're on a Business or Enterprise plan, open the Floorplan Editor after digitizing to review the results. Your original floorplan image is overlaid in the editor, making it easy to compare it against the digitized version and make adjustments.

3Get the Scale Right

Getting the scale right is critical for accurate dimensions:

  • Initial setup: Set the scale carefully during digitizing. This is the foundation for every other measurement in the floorplan
  • Fixing errors: If you have Floorplan editor access and notice an incorrect dimension, click the affected wall and adjust the measurement.

4Photograph Floorplans Head-On

If you're taking a photo of a paper floorplan rather than uploading a file, take the photo head-on, not at an angle.

Tip: Rotation is fine. The floorplan digitizes correctly at any rotation. A skewed (angled) photo, however, makes it impossible to get every dimension correct: fixing one dimension by rescaling throws off another, since perspective distortion affects each part of the image differently.

If you're on a Business or Enterprise plan, open the Floorplan Editor to review the digitized result, make corrections, and start furnishing the space. Saved edits automatically update your 3D model.
